Inception: Ramy Brook

It’s pretty fabulous to be able to do an Inception on one of my favorite going-out-at-night shirt designers, Ramy Brook Sharp.   Her eponymous line, Ramy Brook, can be found everywhere from high end boutiques to local trunk shows.  I’ve written about my go-to Josie top that I take the liberty to wear at least once a month (looks fab with white skinnies), most recently pictured here in Turkey.  Read on how Ramy got started and where she hopes to see herself (household name, much?) down the line.

Name? Ramy Brook Sharp
Age? 45
Degrees (and from where)?

BA. Muhlenberg College. In Allentown, PA

When/how did you come up with the idea for your business?

I felt a need for sexy tops to wear with my jeans that would take me from day to night.

What was the hardest part about turning your idea into a reality, and how did you get past it?

Learning a business I hadn’t experienced was the hardest part. I was in advertising, so designing and manufacturing clothing was completely new to me. I decided to ask everyone I knew in the business for help, from owners of clothing stores to designers. Everyone was extremely helpful. I took diligent notes and learned quickly. Within five months, I had a collection of seven tops.

What is your favorite thing about owning your own business?

Being able to create something amazing without a boss road-blocking my ideas.

What is your least favorite thing about owning your own business?

The nights where I wake up in the middle of night thinking I forgot to do something important.

What kind of hours do you work and do you find you still have time for friends and family?

I work all the time. I have less time for my friends, but they understand and try to work around my schedule. A great way to see them is when we exercise together. My family is my priority so I do my best to be around for every play or concert that my kids have but I’m not as available to help with homework. Hopefully, it will make my kids more independent. They understand and respect that I started my own business. My husband is totally supportive and gets that I’m a bit more tired than usual.

What was your most meaningful experience (job or internship) prior to becoming an entrepreneur?

I was the media director for a boutique advertising agency that focused on fashion. I always had a passion for the fashion world.

Ever work a job you wish you could forget?

My least favorite job was being a lifeguard– a bit too stressful!

Where do you envision yourself 10 years from today?

I hope to build Ramy Brook into a huge lifestyle brand carried in stores all over the country as well as internationally.

What advice would you give to people who want to start their own business?

Go for it! Stay positive and focused.

Is there anything about owning your own business that you wish you knew before you started?

The amount of responsibility I feel.  I’m responsible for developing great things and also for keeping my employees happy.
